while thinking of 'the hijab project' - i.e. the performative assignment of walking around berlin in muslim drag and documenting the process for a month or so, i quickly came to understand that there are a whole set of questions and issues that i need to tackle - some of which are ethical - either before or during the process of this project. here are a few that i've outlined for myself:

the question of privilege:
* that i *can* choose to wear the hijab and then take it off, why do i choose it, what is my privilege based on.
* who will it upset? 1. leftists whom, based on identity politics could easily claim that me being not a muslim, i don't have a right to culturally appropriate the muslim experience for performative purposes. 2. muslims or people who come from muslim background who are my friends who may not be understanding what i'm doing and feel their culture is appropriated.
* can it hurt anyone or is it just a politically-correct question about proper representation?
* do i have the right, as a non-muslim, to do it? do the ends of this project justify its means?
* is it in fact cultural appropriation?

the context of berlin (as compared to tel aviv):
* how is the hijab identified and what with in berlin as compared to tel aviv?
* does wearing a hijab open doors or allow me into certain geographical spaces?
* does it close certain doors or keep me from entering certain spaces?

a personal context:
* this project is not done on a general 'berlin woman' - but in the context of my rather specific life.
* where does it create problems or clashes or serves as a paradox to my normal every day life?
* how does it affect people in my everyday surrounding?
* how does it change my positionality/empathy? (i.e. becoming)
* where in particular does my life clash with this experience?
* the makeover - what do i have to give up about my look/behavior in public space
- how i style myself
